A German Sheppard mix dog was standing on the edge of a four-lane highway. If the dog was to take even one step, she would have surely been hit by a car.
The scene was happening in Mission, Texas when this was noticed by a woman named Ashli Garza who seeing this slammed on her brakes hard.
Ashli Garza told media, “I was not sure what to do with her because there were so many stray dogs in the area that were treated poorly. I was going to take a picture and post it to a local lost and found dog page in our neighborhood. When I opened the door, she came to me on her own and I knew that she was friendly.”
The dog which was covered in mud when came close, Garza saw a huge rusty chain wrapped around her neck.
Garza said, “the chain was wrapped around her neck twice and I was surprised to see that fortunately, it had only caused her a bit of rubbing off on the skin. I was amazed to see as to how she was able to keep her head up.”
Garza was late for her friend’s wedding but knew she could not leave the dog on her own.
Garza said, “I was like, this dog is so muddy. I have the wedding dress of my fined in the car.”
However, Garza set her worries aside and took the dog in the back of her car. Garza tried to take off the chain but it was 20 pounds in weight and Garza could not do it.
Garza kept an eye on the dog out of care on her way to the wedding.
After dropping off the dress, Garza got to her friend’s house and they both took off the chain.
The dog was later kept as a foster dog by Garza’s friend Luz Grumman who named her Penelope. After that Garza got her to a rescue group and now she is living comfortably.
Garza hopes that the story of Penelope will encourage other people to help other stray dogs when they see them.
