Helen’s Flying Frog:-

Helen’s Flying Frog is recently discovered species of frog in the forest of South Vietnam. Its specialty is evident from its name as it is able to fly using its huge webbed feet. This frog has flaps of thin skin in between its arms that allow it t glide through forest to avoid predators and females. Its long feet are used to stick to tree branches after the glide. It can reach ten cm in length.

An Australian scientist discovered this frog and named it after her mother’s name.

Harlequin Toad:-

Variable Harlequin Toad is a species that is found in forests of Costa Rica. In the past few years due to fungus outgrowths and severe climatic changes this one abundant species is now facing threat of extinction.

This toad has coloring of Black, Purple and Yellow that warns its predators about its poisonous nature. The venom indie this toad is 100 times more potent that the Potassium Cyanide. Turtle Frog:-

It has pinky brown colored body with a tiny head and stubbed limbs. Their limbs are strong enough to dig through sand and break termite mounds which are their food source.

This frog skips its tadpole stage and fully forms inside its egg. Their egg is the largest amongst all frog species in Australia measuring up to 5 to 7 mm in length.

Surinam Toad:-

Surinam Toad is found mostly in the tropical forests of Amazon. It can grow up to an amazing length of 20 cm but despite its large body size it has small eyes and an extremely lat body. It attracts the female for mating by making a clicking sound form its throat. The sound is created by striking two of the bones in its throat.

Nature has blessed animal wildlife with many special defense mechanisms that resulted in their natural selection. One of these natural mechanisms is the Camouflage. Some of the amazing animals with this natural camouflage ability are as follows.

Baron Caterpillar:-

Baron Caterpillar is mostly found in India and Southeast Asia. After hatching from their eggs they are only 4 mm in length with small spikes on their body but after 4th or 5th stage of their growth cycle they can grow up to 45 mm in length with spikes getting much larger in size too. These spikes along with caterpillar’s bright green color allow it to camouflage itself as a leaf for both avoiding predation or for hunting prey.

Pygmy Seahorse:-

Pygmy Horse has a length of about 27 mm. due to its miniscule size and elaborate camouflage ability, it was only found first back in 1969 and since 2000 only 6 more specimens have been found. They are found and most probably inhabit in the deep waters of Australia, Indonesia, Japan, New Caledonia and Papua New Guinea.

Leafy Sea Dragon:-

Leaf Sea Dragon is native to the ocean waters of Southern Australia. They have a body length of 35 cm. their bodies are long and slender in shape and are decorated by leaf like appendages. These appendages give them and appearance of an underwater plant and help them camouflage in plain sight. They are closely related to sea horse and are sometimes also called Weedy Sea Dragon.

Dead Leaf Butterfly:-

Dead Leaf Butterfly is found in tropical forests of Asia and mostly in India and Japan. Dead Leaf Butterfly has two generations per year each representing either wet season or dry season. Their wing pattern and color looks just like decomposition of a leaf and they even have holes in them.

Leaf Tailed Gecko:-

Leaf Tailed Gecko is a native to the island of Madagascar and the ones surrounding it. The gecko has 8 leafs surrounding it and they can look either dried up or rotten laves. They are also known for their ability to blend in with tree barks.

We humans in this modern fast age of technology hardly find time for nap but we do enjoy these occasional naps. Sea Otters:-

Where there is water, there sea otters will be napping. While some sea otters also join hands with each other to keep them together while they snooze.

Giraffe:-

Giraffe has an extremely small napping window. They only take 5 minutes worth of nap at any given time and total of 30 minutes sleep whole day. Due to their large height and living in open plains of Africa they are at constant risk of being hunted from predators. Due to this their nap intervals are so minuscule and they nap by sitting down and placing their heads on their backs while other times they just sleep  while standing up to be ready to run when facing danger.

Dolphin:-

Most of the animals do not have to think to breathe during sleep. However the case is opposite for dolphins as they have to consciously think to breath even during their sleep. Due to this reason they only shut off half of their brain whilst sleeping and also keep one of their eyes open. This sleeping pattern is known as Uni hemispheric Sleep. This also prevents them from drowning as well as keeps them on alert from any encroaching predators.

Meerkats:-

Meerkats live in hierarchical societies led by Alpha males and females. They are one of the tight knit animal societies in the world. When sleeping, the alphas are kept in the middle of a large Meerkat cuddling sleeping group. This keeps alphas far away from any danger.

Walrus:-

Walrus have the ability to take a nap on both land and in water. For land they just come out and lay down on ground to sleep. For sleeping in water they keep their heads stick out of the water by filling the elastic pouches called Pharyngeal Pouches with air.
