Longest Living Animals

Animals living in the wild are mostly unable to reach the natural life span due to the harshness of their natural wild habitats. Most of the times they die due to following reasons.

  • Infant mortality
  • Disease
  • Predators
  • Bad weather condition
  • Habitat destruction
  • Food completion
  • Shelter

Whilst they might not reach their full lifespan under these conditions, some animals if given ideal living condition can live up to astounding periods of time. Some of these longest living animals are as follows.

Red sea urchin:-

Red Sea Urchin is found normally in shallow waters of the Pacific Ocean. They are believed to be near immortals. They are known to live up to a time period of around 200 years.

Koi Fish:-

Common Koi fish are able to live up to 25 to 30 years but it is believed that they can almost live up to or even longer than 200 years. One of the famous Koi Fishes, Hanako in Japan died back in 1977. They study of its growth rings revealed it age to be about 226 years at the time of death. This almost makes her older than USA itself.

African Elephant:-

African Elephant is the largest surviving land mammal in the world. They can live up to an average life of 70 years. A recent Zimbabwean study found out that until the time of their death, Elephants can remain fertile.

Macaw:-

Macaws have a natural life span in between 60 to 80 years. While in breeding they can live up to 30 to 35 years. However due to natural habitat destruction and constant poaching of this magnificent world they are already an endangered species.

Galapagos Tortoise:-

Galapagos Giant Tortoise Species of the tortoise is able to live and survive well past one hundred years. The oldest record of this specie’s age is 152 years. One famous Galapagos Tortoise named Lonesome George was record to be of 100 years of age and was still considered a young adult.

Ocean Quahog:-

Some specimen of the Ocean Quahog were studied and reported to be about 400 years’ old living specimens. Amongst all the specimens one named “Ming the Clam” was of 507 years of age. He was given this name because he could have been alive since the Ming Chinese Dynasty era.

Immortal Jellyfish:-

Immortal Jellyfish is a unique species of Jellyfish family. They are able to revert back to their premature state of life when exposed to stress or injury. Although this allows them to be biologically immortal, they do not live a very long life because of getting either eaten by predators or getting gravely injured.
