Many people only consider Ravens as harbinger of death and gloom but they can be never more wrong about these magnificent creatures. Today we brig to you some of the fascinating and incredible facts about ravens that will change you view about them.
Being crazy smart:-
Ravens have been proven by multiple studies to possess human like intelligence. In 2002, a study of a New Caledonian Crow astonished researcher, when it bend a metal wire into a hook to retrieve the food from within a narrow space.
Another study was conducted at Moscow University in which these crows were determined to have analogical reasoning after they played a game of matching flash cards. Matching things is one of the high order reasoning test and these birds without any prior training have the natural capacity to do so.
Friendship with wolves:-
Wolves might have supreme strength when it comes to hunting prey for food but they do not get most of that prey thanks to their pals The Ravens. A study conducted revealed that within one minute of a moose or another prey killed by wolves, a pack of ravens also flood on it. If there are two wolves on the scene then almost 40 percent of the prey goes to ravens and in case if there are 6 wolves then 17 percent goes to ravens.
This is the reason that ravens often follow wolves in wilderness. To pay the debt of their friendship, ravens also lead wolves to carcasses of dead animals and also when wolves are hunting they also alert the wolves from any potential danger as well.
Seen as a sign of omen:-
Ravens have been known to be omen of battle and bloodshed since Celtic mythology period. Irish people believed that goddess of war sends down ravens to eat the bodies of fallen warriors. This myth is true or not but in reality; ravens do eat the dead bodies of animals and even humans. In Hindu religion, they are seen as reincarnation of deceased soul depending upon their good or bad luck. Germans believe them to hold souls of dammed. Swedish folklore take a turn for worst as they believe that ravens are ghost of innocent victims who were murdered and were not given proper burials.
Enjoy getting stoned:-
It does not actually mean that they smoke on weed instead they have their own freaky natural method of getting stoned. The process is called Anting which involves smashing ants and rubbing them all over their bodies. When smashed, ants produce formic acid which is them absorbed directly by skin of ravens and makes them feel extremely good. As to why they do this there are many theories. One is that it is a way to get immune to formic acid and eat ants while other is that it is a learned behavior and the ravens do not have any control over it.
Protect Tower of London:-
A rumor was spread since old times of England that Ravens ward off evils from Tower of London. A King named Bran Hen of Bryneich made request that his head must be buried on top of tower to act as a talisman against any foreign invasion. Ever since then ravens have been here. Although this troy might be fictional theory but in reality, back in 1661 Charles II made it official order to have six ravens on Tower at all times. Till that day there have been six ravens being constantly kept at tower of London.
Remember and recognize human faces:-
If you chase ravens off from your yard by throwing stones or doing something offensive then remember they are not one to easily forgive and forget. In a test conducted by Jon M. Marzluff at the University of Washington in Seattle, seven cows were tagged and released across the campus by researchers some wearing dangerous looking masks and some were wearing neutral masks. The purpose was to see if the ravens recognize these dangerous looking mask men or not and sure enough they recognize these scary masked individuals and not only scolded over them but also dive bombed on the masks as well while leaving the neutral one alone.
