Coolest Animal Species in the World

0

The world is full of amazing animals. So amazing, that narrowing them down to 20 felt nearly impossible. To determine who made the cut for this list, I used very important factors such as, cuteness and how much some of them looked like Pokémon. I know, very official. So here are some of the coolest animals in the world.

Pink Fairy Armadillo

https://www.theodysseyonline.com

The pink fairy armadillo is the smallest and cutest species of armadillo. It is on the list of threatened species and is found in the sandy plains, dunes, and grasslands of Argentina. The pink fairy armadillo is a nocturnal creature that survives mostly on insects and plants.

Glaucus Atlanticus or “the Blue Dragon”

https://www.theodysseyonline.com

These little dragon-like creatures are often only about a few inches long and can be found in the Indian Pacific Oceans. The blue dragon floats upside down in order to blend the blue side of them with the water, and the silver side with the surface of the ocean. This tiny dragon feeds on creatures like the man o’ war and can even deliver a sting similar to it.

The Maned Wolf

https://www.boredpanda.com

The maned wolf is often found in the grasslands of south, central-west, and southeastern parts of Brazil. It is neither related to wolves nor foxes despite its appearance and name, but is actually closer to dogs. The maned wolf hunts alone and primarily eats both meat and plants (about 50% of its diet).

Fossa

https://www.boredpanda.com

The fossa is a carnivorous animal located in Madagascar. Despite having many traits similar to cats, it is more closely related to the Mongoose. The fossa is only found in forest habitats and can hunt in either daytime or night. Over 50 percent of its diet happens to be lemurs.

Blobfish

https://www.boredpanda.com

This blobfish is, in a way, so ugly that it is cute (although reminds me of a certain Pokémon ) This fish lives in the deep waters of Australia, Tasmania, and New Zealand. The blobfish has a density only sightly above that of water. The fish primarily hunts by just floating along and letting creatures wander into its mouth, rather than expending any energy.

Superb Bird of Paradise

https://www.theodysseyonline.com

The mating dance used by male superb birds of paradise. Typically females reject about 20 mates before selecting one they want to mate with. They are often found in New Guinea although it is unsure just how many of these birds there are. As far as scientists know, the population has remained stable.

Glowing sea turtle

http://www.foxnews.com

Divers in the Solomon Islands discovered a glowing sea turtle under the waves. While other animals are known to be bioluminescent, this is the first documented case of a glowing reptile in the wild. According to diver David Gruber, an associate professor of biology at Baruch College, the hawksbill sea turtle’s shell glowed both red and green, but it’s likely that the red came from biofluorescent algae.

Eastern Musk Turtle

https://www.earthrangers.com

If you’re in southern Ontario and you see something climbing a tree, don’t assume it’s a squirrel! It could be an Eastern musk turtle! Although these small turtles aren’t the best swimmers or even walkers, they are excellent tree climbers. In some instances, Eastern musk turtles have been known to climb up to 2 m (6.6 ft) high. This turtle emits a musky odour from the glands on the edge of its shell to scare predators away. That’s why it is also called the stinkpot turtle. PEUW!

Turkey Vulture

https://www.earthrangers.com

Unlike many other birds, turkey vultures have an amazing sense of smell (olfactory sense). Turkey vultures can pick up a whiff of carrion (flesh of dead animals) from great distances, even if it is covered by vegetation. By eating dead animals, they prevent the carcasses from spreading disease.

If they are approached by a predator, turkey vultures will regurgitate semi-digested meat that smells so bad, it keeps other animals away. And if they need to flee but are too heavy to fly, they will (you guessed it) vomit.

https://www.boredpanda.com

This cat was busy tearing the curtain of its owner and when the owner caught it, it only looked guilty for just one second and then it continued with its dirty deed.

Cat ruining the 15th century old Manuscript

https://www.boredpanda.com

Today we find the animals doing all sorts of jerk things and we can even catch them in act on camera. However this does not mean that in old times animals were gentle creatures. Dog drowning its owner for the raft

https://www.boredpanda.com

Horrifying Facts about Ducks

0

Majority of us grow up while loving the cute and adorable looking ducks. These ducks with their silly quacking sounds and huge paddle like feet are not only adorable to look at but are quite funny too. However don’t be fooled by these ducks as they are all not that funny and innocent looking as they might seem. There is a dark side to them and some of these ducks have even done deeds that are cruel and violent. For our readers today we bring to you few of the horrifying facts about the ducks that you never knew before.

Duck Penis

https://news.nationalgeographic.com

Did you know that duck penises are shaped like corkscrews? They are stored in sacs under their bodies, but when a duck penis is erect, it can become up to 20 centimeters (8 in) long. That’s about a quarter of the length of the animal’s entire body. To put that in perspective, that would be like a human having a forearm-sized member. To make this even more bizarre, it’s helpful to know that 97 percent of bird species don’t even have a penis.

To make things even worse, the penises of ducks are sharp and full of backward-pointing spikes. They are specifically made to stab into the female duck painfully. The spikes dig into the female duck’s vagina like a hundred sharp hooks to prevent escape.

Mating Rituals

https://www.buzzfeed.com

Ducks usually copulate by raping their females. This forced copulation had caused the female duck to evolve in a way that scientists label “a sexual arms race.” The more terrifying the male genitalia, the more convoluted and tricky the female genitalia. It just goes to show that female ducks are not complacent in this violent and forced copulation. Ducks also routinely engage in gang rape. Yep, gang rape. It’s not uncommon for three to six male ducks to chase and violently rape one female. On the other side of the spectrum, if a female duck is into the male duck “courting” her, she can relax certain muscles to make sure that the sperm of the favored male will fertilize her eggs.

The Hard Life of a Duckling

http://www.dailymail.co.uk

Many ducklings, those cute little cheepers that follow their mothers around the pond, won’t make it to adulthood. The survival rate is awful: Only about 60 percent grow into fully independent ducks. Various things impact a duckling’s chance at survival. For example, bad weather. Hail has been known to kill a record number of the little guys. A duckling is also the perfect prey for a whole host of other animals. Even fish can swim up to the surface and gulp them down. A big enough bullfrog will eat a duckling, too. Hawks, foxes, snakes, and turtles will gladly snatch up a duckling snack. These baby birds are almost helpless until they finally reach maturity at 50–70 days of age, when they can finally fly.

Gastroliths

http://greatcretaceouswalk.blogspot.com

To grind up the bones of the fish that they swallow whole, ducks usually swallow sharp rocks and pebbles to aid in digestion. That’s right; they make their own set of teeth DIY-style. This is called a gastrolith.

Once the rocks are not sharp anymore, ducks will vomit them back up and look for new rocks. This means that you can potentially pick up a nice, rounded stone that has been in a duck’s gizzard.

Duck Eyelids

http://mentalfloss.com/

Ducks can see in full color, and due to the sideways placement of the eyes on their heads, they have a nearly 360-degree view of the world around them. They also have a freaky third eyelid. However, that’s not necessarily odd. All birds have three eyelids. These “nictitating membranes” are used like underwater goggles to improve the duck’s vision while diving.

Duck’s Cold, Unfeeling Foot

http://misslemberg.blogspot.com

We all know that ducks have webbed feet, but did you know that a duck can restrict blood flow to his feet? As the temperature drops, less blood will flow to a duck’s extremities. This is how a duck can swim in frigid water and stand comfortably on ice.

Duck feet will also change color during the mating season. Much like a red baboon butt, a duck’s foot will swell and turn a bright red when they are beginning to pair off.

Grand Passage

http://www.etop10.xyz

A grand passage occurs when an entire population of ducks goes crazy. It usually happens after weird weather patterns occur—sometimes, a massive cold front will cause millions of ducks to migrate at once. This phenomenon happens from time to time, but it is always jarring and frightening to the people on the ground underneath these gigantic clouds of ducks. At times, they number so many that airports are choked with ducks and airplanes have to wait until the mass of birds moves on before they can resume service.

Duck Vigilance

http://www.etop10.xyz

You can never surprise a duck. They are always watching, always waiting. It’s terrifying. It’s hard for predators to sneak up on an adult duck. Ducks are proven to sleep with one eye open. When sleeping in a group, ducks will almost always sleep in a line. The duck at the end of the line will keep one eye open to watch for predators.

Strange Animal Hybrids Bred In Photoshop

Hybrid Animals That Are Hard To Believe Actually Exist

0

Legend is full of strange, hybrid creatures, and Photoshoppers have dedicated countless hours to creating new ones. But this list contains no Photoshopped images: all of these animals are real! You’ve all heard of the liger, but what about the narluga? Or the leopon?

This list of REAL hybrid animals will surprise and amaze you. What does the future hold, with advances in genetic engineering and cloning? Only time will tell! Keep reading to find out more about these strange creatures.

Liger ( Male Lion + Female Tiger)

Liger

https://www.boredpanda.com

The liger is a hybrid cross between a male lion (Panthera leo) and a tigress (Panthera tigris). Thus, it has parents with the same genus but of different species. It is the largest of all known extant felines.Ligers enjoy swimming, which is a characteristic of tigers, and are very sociable like lions. Ligers exist only in captivity because the habitats of the parental species do not overlap in the wild. ligers typically grow larger than either parent species, unlike tiglons which tend to be about as large as a female tiger.

Tigon (Male Tiger + Female Lion)

Tigon

https://www.boredpanda.com

A tigon is the result of a male tiger and female lion mating. Tigons exhibit visible characteristics of both parents, some having both spots from the mother and stripes from the father. Regardless of which parent they take after, they still resemble some fearless predators!

Jaglion (Male Jaguar + Female Lion)

Jaglion

https://www.boredpanda.com

Also known as jaguon, the jaglion is the offspring between a male jaguar and a female lion. This mounted specimen is on display at the Walter Rothschild Zoological Museum in Hertfordshire, England. It has the lion’s background color, brown, jaguar-like rosettes and the powerful build of the jaguar.

Zebroid  (Zebra + Any other Equine)

Zebroid

http://twistedsifter.com

A zebroid (also zedonk, zebra mule, and zebrule) is the offspring of any cross between a zebra and any other equine: essentially, a zebra hybrid. In most cases, the sire is a zebra stallion. Zebroid is the generic name for all zebra hybrids. The different hybrids are generally named using the portmanteau convention of sire’s name + dam’s name. There is generally no distinction made as to which zebra species is used. Examples include: zorse, zebrule, zonkey, zebonkey, zony.

Wholphin (Bottlenose Dolphin + False Killer Whale)

Wholphin

http://twistedsifter.com

A Wholphin or Wolphin is a rare hybrid, born from a mating of a female Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) with a male False Killer Whale (Pseudorca crassidens). There are currently only two in captivity, both at Sea Life Park in Hawaii.Wholphins, though not commonly sighted by fisherman, are known in popular seafaring lore as “The Great Gray Beast.”

Kekaimalu, the first wholphin in captivity, proved fertile when she gave birth at a very young age. The calf died after a few days. However, in 1991, Kekaimalu gave birth once again, to daughter Pohaikealoha. For 2 years she cared for the calf, but did not nurse it (it was hand-reared by trainers). Pohaikealoha died at age 9.

Beefalo or cattalo (Domestic Cattle + Americon Bison)

cattalo

https://www.providr.com

Beefalo or cattalo are the cross between buffalo and cows. Accidental crosses were noticed as long ago as 1749, but the breed was created to combine the characteristics of both animals for beef production. These beasts are wreaking havoc around the Grand Canyon since they consume 10 gallons of water, defecate at the watering holes and also eat the fields bare

Mulards ( Pekin + Muscovy ducks)

Mulards

https://www.providr.com

Mulards are the hybrid offspring of Pekin and Muscovy ducks. Due to muscovies having a tendency to intermingle with other domestic duck breeds, interbreeding does occur. However, mulards are mostly commercially produced on farms for meat and foie gras. I wonder if they are as tasty as the Peking Duck dish

Coywolf  (Wolf + Coyote)

Coywolf

https://list25.com/

The coywolf is a term for a canid hybrid descended from coyotes and one of three other North American Canis species, the gray, eastern and red wolf. Coyotes are closely related to eastern and red wolves, having diverged just 150,000–300,000 years ago and evolved side by side in North America.

Grolar (Grizzly Bear + Polar Bear)

Grolar

https://list25.com

The grolar is a rare hybrid between a grizzly and polar bear. Although these two species are genetically similar and often found in the same territories, they usually tend to avoid each other and they have different breeding habits. Grizzlies tend to live and breed on land while polar bears prefer breeding on the ice. Yet, grolars have been recorded to occur both in captivity and in the wild.
