Holidays are the wonderful time of the year and that is until your pet ingests something that can disrupt the whole holiday and compels you to run for a vet. We bring to you some of the holiday hazards that can be harmful for your pets.
Turkey Bones:-
You have cooked a large turkey for holiday and as you sat down and start eating that yummy treat you see your dog looking at you with pleading eyes. Resist the urge to throw any toward him. The rich fatty foods are harmful for their stomach and the turkey bones ingested can puncture intestines as well as other organs. I is not only harmful for dogs but for cats as well. If you pet has eaten some they can exhibits symptoms like vomiting and diarrhea.
Sugar free bakery items:-
You might think that holiday cookies can b good treat for your pet but beware as the artificial sweeteners like Xylitol in these sugar free baked cookies are harmful for their health. They can cause their blood pressure to drop at dangerous levels. These sugar free baked goods are generally more hazardous for dogs. If they have ingested some, they will exhibit symptoms like vomiting, lethargy, loss of focus, seizures and even liver failure.
Chocolate:-
Chocolate stimulates the nervous system and the heart. It should be kept away from your pets at all times. All chocolates are harmful but dark chocolate has much worse effects due to different sweeteners in many different varieties. Normally dogs are tempted to eat more chocolate, cats only taste chocolate but they do not gobble it down like dogs do. Consumption of chocolate can exhibit symptoms like vomiting diarrhea, increased heart rate, tremors and seizures and sometimes death.
Holiday plants:-
On Christmas Eve houses are filled with Christmas Cactus and Poinsettias. Many people think that if cats or dogs eat them it can be toxic but it is a misconception. The only bloom by eating these plants is irritation in mouth. Other holiday plants like Mistletoe and holly are extremely toxic for your pet’s health. Ingestion of these plants may exhibit symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea and heart arrhythmia.
Alcohol:-
You pet might seem thirsty but strictly keep eggnog and punch bowl away for their reach. Pet animals must be kept away from alcohols as alcohol presses down on nervous system. It is equally harmful for both cats and dogs. Upon ingestion they can exhibit symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, disorientation, lethargy, loss of focus, breathing difficulty, tremors, seizures and even coma.
