Simon Dell; Photographer stumbles upon a family of mice living in his garden, now he builds them a miniature village

Simon Dell is a photographer who recently came across a family of mice living in his garden. Instead of panicking after seeing them and running to get the traps to get rid of these mice, he decided to do something amazing as he brought out his tools.

Dell built these mice a miniature village and the mice have been grateful to Dell as they posed for him in front of the camera.

Simon told media that, “I was just one day walking about in the garden with my camera, taking pictures of birds when I noticed something moving in the grass on the ground. I pointed my camera at the grass and was delighted to see a cute little mouse standing tall like a meerkat in the fresh cut grass.’

I instantly realized that this mouse is a star. So I ran to the house to bring him some peanuts. I sat there waiting for him and after few minutes he again came out of the tress.

Seeing him eating the treats, it was at that time I suddenly thought of building them a little shelter to give them a place to live and feed.

I had a bit of experience with wildlife photography and of mouse as I already had a mouse living in my home’s garden shed which only came after it was dark. That was a Wood Mouse and I named him Stuart.

He was a single mouse who left at the Spring of 2018. I think he found a mate. I hope that he would come this year back to the garden and would love to meet these ice in the garden.

I have all kind of wildlife in the garden. I see many types of birds like starlings, house sparrows robins and many more. I even had a Grey heron visitor in my garden who would take fishes from my pond.

We also have a fox that comes usually around at night and also have lots of hedgehogs and squirrels.

At first there was only one mouse that had a cut on his ear and we named him George. I piled in some small logs around a cardboard and filled it with moss and straw to give the little guy a shelter.

I could see a cat sitting right outside the fence so this box house gave him a little shelter and safety.

I placed some fencing outside the box to make it safer for the mouse. My Jack Russell Terrier dog makes sure that cat does not come inside.

After few days I noticed that there was in fact more than one mouse inside the box. My guess was right and the two came out together to eat the food.

I decided to build them a nice little home.

The first stage was a log pile which took an hour to build. In coming days more mice came and I added in some changes making more rooms. The box has 2 to 3 ways for going outside s the mice can come and go as they like. Over the few weeks, the log pile village is steadily growing in size and population.

Recently I counted 5 mice and one female which I named Mildred. She is looking pregnant and is likely to give birth to a whole litter of baby mice right around Christmas time.

Knowing that mice can give birth up to 14 babies, I am planning to build an even bigger log pile house with more rooms.

The mice also seem to love this log pile home as they moved in without doubting it. They are wild animals, so as soon as I get close they run away. I only manage to sit down few feet away from hem and with help of zoon lens I captured their photos.

I give them mostly all natural food like berries, nuts and few fruits that grow in the wild right by the road. Sometimes I give them hazel or walnuts. To treat them especially I sometime throw in dry mealworms.

I have owned a camera since past three years but now slowly because of these mice I have been upgrading my kit to improve my photography skills.

With a better kit and my skills improving day by day I am taking more and more wondrous shots of the wildlife.
